Our bathroom had ghastly tiles, so I painted them. It looked okay from a distance, but very difficult to get a truly 'tile like' finish. The paint stinks.
Main downside was that in areas of damp, e.g. basin splashback, the paint peeled off quite quickly, and the tiled windowledge peeled because of damp bottomed bottles being put on it. It was okay for a quick cheap fix, but looked tatty quite.
