Fifty-five bathrooms on the Charles River campus are now gender-neutral and another 70 will be added by summer. BU will build two gender-neutral bathrooms in the GSU and redesignate more than 100 other bathrooms on campus as "washrooms," open to users regardless of gender. The report advocated for the changes to the bathrooms and cited research showing how transgender students report more mental health-related issues and harassment, both verbal and physical, compared to their cisgender peers (people whose gender identity matches their sex assigned at birth). BU policy allows transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming employees to access to restrooms and locker room facilities consistent with their gender identity.
